The Construction Plant Competency Scheme is a nationally recognised card scheme that sets the industry standard for construction plant operators. It is fully supported by the UKCG, which is made up of the largest construction companies in the UK.
CPCS cards, or 'tickets', are proof that operators are properly skilled and trained, and will afford them access to more construction sites than other card schemes.
Under new rules introduced in 2008, the CPCS provisional license (Red Card) has a shorter life of just two years. It cannot be renewed. To convert a Red Card to a full CPCS license (Blue Card), operators need to obtain an NVQ in Plant Operations. The Blue Card lasts five years and is easy to renew without complicated tests.
CPQ offers two routes to get the NVQ. The traditional route, On-Site Assessment and Training (OSAT), is carried out at the operator's workplace over a period of six months or more. The alternative, Experienced Worker Practical Assessment Route (EWPAR), enables CPQ to fast track experienced operators and award an NVQ at the end of just one day.
CPCS is the only ticketing scheme that is subsidised with CITB/Construction Skills grants.
