The source of most British health and safety law is the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and to each other.

Details of how the Health and Safety at Work Act applies in specific situations are laid out in The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (the Regulations). CPQ works in partnership with its clients to help them comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law.

Excavation is defined as: “any earthwork, trench, well, shaft, tunnel or underground working”

Most construction projects will involve some form of earthwork trenching, these excavations can include a degree of risk to personnel working on or around the site. Understanding the risks and having the correct procedures, safety equipment and the knowledge to use them will determine the best and safest way to approach and undertake the work.

More detailed information can be found in the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996.
