The source of most British health and safety law is the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and to each other.

Details of how the Health and Safety at Work Act applies in specific situations are laid out in The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (the Regulations). CPQ works in partnership with its clients to help them comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law.
PUWER includes regulations designed to minimise the risk of serious injury to those using abrasive wheels in grinding and cutting machines. Sending your workforce on CPQ's Abrasive Wheels course will help your company to comply with PUWER regulations.

CPQ's accredited trainers provide practical training on the storage, fitting, use, repair and servicing of abrasive wheels. The aim of the course is to promote safe working practices, provide an understanding of current legislation and raise awareness of the dangers and hazards of abrasive wheels. It includes practical guidance to reduce workplace accidents and improve the efficiency of the grinding/cutting process.

On completion of the course, candidates will be issued with an NPORS card, valid for three years. This is proof that your workforce is appropriately trained to use abrasive wheels safely and efficiently.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) are intended to minimise the risk of accidents caused by work equipment. The regulations apply to any equipment which is used by an employee at work, including abrasive wheels.

PUWER applies to all workplaces subject to the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974.

In general terms, the Regulations require that equipment provided for use at work is:

. suitable for the intended use;
. safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and, in certain circumstances, inspected to ensure this remains the case;
. used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training; and
. accompanied by suitable safety measures, e.g. protective devices, markings, warnings.
